Skiing the Mont Blanc is a major goal (major by all meanings especially with its height of 4808 metres, to be exact) and is the perfect way to end the skiing season in style.
To give ourselves a good chance to reach our aim, we go over some basic skiing techniques in the Chamonix valley. Right from the start, we take in some stunning landscapes, even before heading off to tackle the Mont Blanc. The ascent is physically challenging - so you'd better be in shape - but we guarantee that you’ll have a fantastic time not only on the top but also when simply tackling the North face with skis on your feet. So be warned… you're in for a great time !
Meet up at Les Bossons, briefing, handing over of rented gear, or simply gear check.
Transfer Chamonix, ride up to the Aiguille du Midi with the cable car (3842 m). From the summit, we can see the Mont Blanc ski route that we will soon follow. Skis on our foot, we cross the Géant glacier to the foot of the Tacul Pyramid (3468 m). Alternating climbs and descents, we then return to the Col du Midi (3532 m) to reach the Cosmiques mountain hut (3613 m). This first day allows an introduction to glacier skiing and to start acclimatization.
Ascent/descent: + 450 m /- 700 m
Meals included: picnic and dinner
Accommodation included: mountain hut
Departure for the ascent of the Combe des Périades after descending part of the famous "Vallée Blanche". We go up the Périades glacier. We may also stand the chance to climb up to the summit of Tacul (4248 m). This will depend on weather and snow conditions at the time being as well as the skills and shape of the participants. Then, via the "Vallée Blanche" that we ski down, we will reach the valley of Chamonix.
Ascent/descent: + 1000 m / - 3000 m
Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner
Accommodation included: 3* hotel
After a good restful night, and breakfast, transfer to the Aiguille du Midi cable car in Chamonix. We use the cable car to get up to the Plan de l'Aiguille (2317 m). We put our skins on our skis to cross beneath the impressive North face of the Aiguille du Midi and take foot on the Bossons glacier at approx 2400 m a.s.l. While crossing a glacial plateau, we reach a tormented glacial zone called "the Junction". This area can be tricky depending on the snow, we will get roped up. We reach the mountain hut using gear on a short section.
Ascent/descent: + 850 m / - 100 m
Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner
Accommodation included: mountain hut
After breakfast, we leave the hut and head towards the Northern ridge of the Dome, on a more technical route but safer than the climb via the plateau. We reach the ridge on our skis and then use the crampons to ski over to the Dome that we skirt to the East to reach the Col du Dome at approx 4250 m a.s.l. A steep section allows us to reach the Vallot shelter (4362 m). From there, we climb up along the Bosses ridge, to finally reach the summit of the Mont Blanc. If weather is good, the view is grandiose: the valley of Chamonix, the Aosta valley, the Swiss peaks all so nearby...
Now we have 2 possible options: one is to ski directly down the North face if conditions allow to do so and if we're not too tired, second option is to ski down via the ridge, a slightly easier route. In any case we reach the Grand Plateau at approx 4000 m a.s.l. and the Petit Plateau at approx 3700 m a.s.l. This route has crevasses and requires a lot of attention. Our route descends close by the hut from where we reach the Bossons glacier. From there we ski down to the valley.
Ascent/descent: + 1850 m/- 2400 m
Meals included: breakfast and picnic
Please note: this itinerary is an example of a mountaineering and ski touring trip with Azimut around and up the Mont Blanc, and should only be used as a guideline. Weather and conditions in the mountains as well as participants' abilities may impact itinerary choices. We kindly ask you to respect such decision. We may also change accommodation, maintaining the same standard, according to logistics and availabilities.
In case practices and customs defined by the local guide authorities change, estimating the reasonable number of clients per guide, for safety reasons, Azimut respects these, even last minute, decisions. Such cases are rare and mostly related to exceptional conditions in the mountains. Therefore some compensation may be requested from your side due to less participants per guide.
Please be wearing your ski outfit upon arrival.
The last day, we try to get back to Oulx by 5 pm to catch the TGV, but we cannot guarantee this (weather, traffic). We recommend you to get tickets that can be changed.
