In a nutshell

Have you always dreamed of exploring the Alps by ski touring? Trust us, we'll take you to one of the most emblematic regions of the Alps: the Austrian Tyrol!

To be more precise, we're taking you to the Stubai Alps for a ski touring adventure. Although wild and little frequented, these small secondary valleys are very easy to access (less than an hour's drive from the capital of the Alps: Innsbruck). On the programme: great skiing, picture-postcard scenery, typical accommodation, local cuisine... in short: a great taste of Tyrolean culture!

Buffet breakfast at the hotel, very well served, something for everyone. Even for those who are used to eating speck in the morning! Bags packed and safety equipment checked, then transfer by minibus to the Kühtai ski resort: the highest in the country! This area offers great off-piste skiing in wide, powdery valleys. D3 - Kraspe Valley

After breakfast, a short transfer to the Kraspe valley on the eastern flank of Khutai. We walk up the valley along a stream. The climb is gradual. Apart from a short, slightly technical section to cross the stream, there are no difficulties - it's a beautiful walk and we're enjoying it!

Upon reaching a small hut, you can choose between two vallons, both very open and pleasant to ski. And as they say: after the effort, the comfort! The sunny terrace of the Schärmer Alm at the entrance to the valley is the ideal place to enjoy a typical local dish accompanied by a lager (there are no 0.25cl beers here). On the menu: goulash, sauerkraut saussage, strudel, etc. Something for everyone!

Elevation gain: +1100m /-1100m

D4 - Glacier atmosphere in the Gleirschtal

Breakfast and departure for the valley just behind the hotel hamlet: the Gleirschtal. The ascent is a little steeper. Throughout the hike, there are great views of the valley's highest peak (3.189m) and the glacier below (Gleirscher Fernerkogel).  A short picnic break with a breathtaking panorama followed by a long ski descent!  Then back to the hotel for a well-earned sauna session!

Elevation gain: + 1200m /- 1200m

Meals included this day : Breakfast - Picnic - Dinner

D5 - Off to the Westfallenhaus

Check-out after breakfast. Only the bare essentials are taken in the rucksack; the rest can be stored in the hotel lobby or in the minibus. The goal for the day: the Westfallenhaus! A typical refuge in the heart of the Stubai Alps, at an altitude of 2.273m, it's a magical place! An Alpine universe, a warm atmosphere and local gastronomy guaranteed!

Elevation gain: +/-850m

Meals included this day : Breakfast - Picnic - Dinner

Accommodation included this day : Refuge

D6 - Return to the valley and end of stay

Breakfast at the refuge, then an early start to the long-awaited ski descent. Back at the minibus, we put down our skis and collect our belongings before starting the transfer back to Innsbruck and then Briançon. End of the trip. Auf Wiedersehen!

Equipment - clothing & gear

Make sure to wear bright colours, it's good for the soul and give photos a funky edge !

Skiing material (all in excellent condition)

  • Ski touring skis with appropriate bindings. We advise freeride type skis so you can enjoy powdery descents and skiing on all types of snow
  • Ski skins
  • Ski crampons (i.e. "couteaux")
  • Ski poles
  • Ski touring boots
  • Ice axe
  • Harness
  • Avalanche kit: transceiver, shovel and probe (please let us know if you have your own, if not we lend them for free)
  • Backpack: capacity of 40 liters

Security advice: avalanche airbag backpacks are highly recommended.

They help to stay on the surface in case of avalanche and minimize the risk of burial. Our guides systematically use them and we highly recommend you to opt for high quality and reliable gear. If you don't have an avalanche airbag we rent them out at a very competitive price.

If you don't have the adequate equipment for the trip, don't worry and travel light: we rent out the required gear and hand it over at the start of the trip ! Our equipment is relatively new, if not brand new, of good quality and adapted to your choice of activity.

Rental prices for this ski touring holiday:

Full Pack (skis, boots, skins, poles, knives) 235€
Skis (skis, skins, poles, knives) €210
Boots €68
Airbag €75
Glacier Pack (crampons, ice axe and harness) €95

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes that it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start.

Headwear

  • Warm hat or buff/scarf
  • Ski goggles (2 pairs) and sunglasses: UV factory 4 protective lenses. Photochromic glasses adapt to light intensity and are very useful
  • Helmet (strongly recommended)

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved tops to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Take this into consideration if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Middle layer: a light polar or synthetic jacket for an extra layer of heat during breaks
  • Outer layer: a Gore-tex or similar type of jacket with a breathable waterproof membrane. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: trousers with a breathable waterproof membrane (Gore Tex or similar) with long side zips allowing air to flow, recommended on climbs
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane. Mittens are always a good idea for really cold days of for those of you who feel the cold !
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed.

Footwear

  • Ski socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Think about them if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers recommended for evening wear. Try charentaises they're really comfortable !

Odds & ends

  • a 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • a pocket knife
  • duck tape
  • factor 50 suncream
  • a duffle bag holding up to 90 litres to leave at the hotel or in a vehicle. No suitcases.

Toiletries and first aid kit

  • Personal toilet bag
  • To make up a first aid kit, please find all relevant information on the Ifremmont website.
