In a nutshell

Ever thought of skiing on volcano slopes, in powder and down to the Ocean ? We have and we're about to embark you on this thrilling experience with such an atmosphere, such lights, such encounters, you'll only come across this in the land of the rising sun.

The first part of this trip takes place on Rishiri, a small volcanic island, at far North end of the country, in a homestay. The other part, in the central area of Hokkaido, is very different. Here we stay in a comfortable hotel. This contrasting mix is ideal and makes this trip become grandiose and unique.

Forget your skis with waists up to 110 mm, you'll need real fatties that provide the float you'll need to get around and about in the powder whilst enjoying the scenery. In wintertime, the atmosphere in Japan is particularly relaxing. Besides skiing this trip is ideal to recharge your batteries, treat yourself and take a break from a hectic life. In short, an exotic trip for a truly authentic experience with excellent Japanese cuisine and above all, an unforgettable ski dream. The perfect combo !

Day to day

Day 1 - Welcome & transfer

Welcome at Wakkanai airport and transfer to our hotel. Have a good nights sleep, tomorrow is going to be full of emotions. Charge your batteries !

Meal included: none

Accommodation included: hotel

Day 2 - Rishiri dream

Early in the morning we catch the ferry. The ferry is comfortable, you'll be able to relax and catch up on your sleep, just let yourself go with the flow. If you're not quite convinced: take a "seat" in the comfortable lounge and just watch the Japanese. Your only risk: taking a liking !

Upon arrival in Rishiri, we drop off our gear in our ryokan, a typical Japanese family homestay where we stay for 3 nights.

We set off skis on our feet on a short itinerary above the tiny harbour of Oshidomari up through a nice berch and ... bamboo forest ! We constantly have a sea view.

Back to base, we head straight away to the public onsen ! Time to relax ! All naked, there are several hot pools to soak in, both inside and outside. You still remember the cold feet and hands you had earlier in the day ? After a nice rince off and totally chilled out, happy and dyed like marshmellows, it's time to get back to our homestay for dinner. Our hostess prepares meals with good fresh local produce from the sea and the market. Meals are served in several dishes on low tables on the floor. Truly scrumptuous ! This is the Japan, the real one !

Ascent/descent: +/- 500 m approx

Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner

Accommodation included: homestay

Day 3 - Rishifurai powder festival

We set off for Rishifurai on the Western end of the island. We climb up the Western slopes of the volcano to gain a maximum of altitude. Our downhill itinerary, depending on conditions, is most likely to be different to make the most of the powder... Let the hounds loose !

Back in Rishifurai, the local onsen is not to be missed: sea view from the pool inside ! You were looking for a sun set ? There you are !

On the way back to our comfortable homestay, we can enjoy the end of daylight with sea view on the "Rishiri fantastic road » that follows the coastline.

Ascent/descent: +/- 800 m to 1000 m approx

Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner

Accommodation included: homestay

Day 4 - Great skiing in Oniwaki

We set off for Oniwaki, a tiny village on the South-Eastern end of the island. We put on our skins and quit the village, from where we climb up through the forest to reach the Southern ridges that lead to the summit until it gets steep (and quite steep). U-turn and time to chase the powder downhill... We're not here to mess around ! Down to the sea and back home.

Ascent/descent: +/- 800 m to 1000 m approx

Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner

Accommodation included: homestay

Day 5 - New spot : Furano

After breakfast, we take the ferry back to Hokkaido and drive over to Furano (approx 4-5 hrs driving) to our basecamp for the rest of the trip, in a totally different atmosphere, a comfortable hotel that has its own onsen. You'll probably be looking forward to the daily onsen. Evening open and up to you: there's plenty of different restaurants to choose from in Furano.

Meal included: breakfast

Accommodation included: comfortable hotel

Day 6 - Mount Ashibetsu (1726 m)

Today we're playing at home in the Mount Ashibetsu area (1726 m), this saves a drive. The central area of Hokkaido is extremely well provided with snow and visibility is often limited… That's a good sign, it's snowing pizzas [heavy heavy snowfalls] ! Then this is just the right time to go skiing in the woodlands, or in the resort as we'll most probably get our snouts covered with powder.

Ascent/descent: + 900 m / - 1300 m approx

Meal included: breakfast

Accommodation included: comfortable hotel

Day 7 - Asahidake Volcano (active)

Asahidake, a small resort with just one lift is the place to be today. The lift takes us up the volcano slopes... This volcano is active...yes, with real whisps of smoke emanating from the cracks in the ground, not to forget the smell... Our aim today is to attempt to get up this 2290 m high summit, the top of Hokkaido.

Back to the starting point through forests with heaps of snow and an incredible light show.

On the way back, we can stop over at a magnificent and huge onsen before going back to Furano. It seems ages since we were last at an onsen !

Ascent/descent: + 700 m / - 1200 m approx

Meal included: breakfast

Accommodation included: comfortable hotel

Day 8 - Chilling out in Kamui

Today is free style : time to take it easy. We set off for Kamui, a tiny ski resort with only a few lifts. This place is typically Japanese. We take the lift up to the top of the hill, and from there, make our way down through the powder. It's up to you: either freerando all day long or ski touring, depending on weather and snow conditions of course.

Back to Furano.

Meal included: breakfast

Accommodation included: comfortable hotel

Day 9 - See you soon !

Unfotunately it's time to say goodbye. Transfer to Asahikawa, Furano's airport. End of trip.

Meal included: breakfast

Please note this itinerary is an example of a ski touring trip in Japan on the islands of Rishiri and Hokkaïdo. The guide may adjust certain itineraries and ski areas according to weather and snow conditions as well as participants' abilities. We may also change accommodation, with the same standards, depending on logistics and availabilities.

Guiding

Azimut qualified mountain guide.

All our mountain guides are certified. We choose them for their sympathy, their teaching and organisational skills. We stay tuned in, work hands in hands, and make sure their working conditions are the best.

Getting around

Azimut minivan.

Daypack

Bring a small day pack large enough to carry your personal belongings for the day such as (extra) clothing, a few snacks and security equipment. We strongly recommend that you wear an airbag.

Ski lifts

Considering the itinerary may be modified due to mountain and snow conditions, ski lift fares are not included in the price. The ultimate day to day itinerary will depend on local conditions. To allow flexibility ski passes will be purchased on the spot so we can easily adjust the programme. You should budget approx. 80 € for ski lift fares.

How technical does it get ? How fit should I be ?

  • Skill level

You should be at ease skiing in any type of snow. We ski every day at a good pace. Slopes can include some short steep sections. Short climbs with skins involved, 45 min to 1 hr max per day. You will not be expected to have previous ski touring experience.

  • Stamina level

A good physical condition is expected, as we skin approx 45 min to 1 hr per day and ski the entire day at a steady pace. On powder days we just trace in the powder, no skinning those days.

Beware, you're not playing in the skatepark in your neighbourhood: even though you're extremely keen, are craving to make first tracks in the powder snow, don't forget that this trip is far away overseas, in remote areas and rescue services may be slow and often less well organised than in your home country. So keep cool and take it easy to fully enjoy...and please avoid a back flip without knowing what's behind.

A pair of Crocs is nice to have along and comfy to wear in your hotel room or in the minibus after an outing, and they don't slip on snow !

Good to know: If you don't have the level required, the guide may ask you to leave for the well-being of the rest of the group if necessary. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start.

Headwear

  • Warm hat or buff/scarf
  • Ski goggles (2 pairs) and sunglasses: UV factory 4 protective lenses. Photochromic glasses adapt to light intensity and are very useful
  • Helmet (highly recommended)

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved tops to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Take this into consideration if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Middle layer: a light polar or synthetic jacket for an extra layer of heat during breaks
  • Outer layer: a Gore-tex or similar type of jacket with a breathable waterproof membrane. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: trousers with a breathable waterproof membrane (Gore Tex or similar) with long side zips allowing air to flow, recommended on climbs
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane. Mittens are always a good idea for really cold days of for those of you who feel the cold !
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed.

Footwear

  • Ski socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Think about them if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers / Crocs recommended for evening wear.

Odds & ends

  • 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • Pocket knife
  • Duck tape
  • Suncream, UV factor 50
  • Duffle type bag holding up to 110 litres to leave at the hotel or in the vehicle. No suitcases.
