La vallée de la Clarée is a well kept secret that we are more than happy to share with you….Providing that off piste skiing is your thing. Largely unspoilt the valley is full of rustic charm and offers a breathtaking winter skiing opportunities. We'll start off in a charming little village with it's wooden and stone houses and we'll stop off every evening in charming and rustic settings. Itinaries are multiple and will vary depending upon the weather and the global level of the group. If the weather is good we'll savour the panoramic views of the Massif des Écrins and maybe even sample some fantastic cuisine on the other side of the Italian border. If you're looking for excuses not to come, don't bother! You can get a high speed train straight from Paris or Lyon.
Meet up at the train station at Briançon, Oulx or at the starting point in Névache. Once we have met the guide we’ll head to the vallée de Névache where we’ll check our equipment. Then we’ll head to the high valley and the refuge de Buffère. There, the guide will go over some essential techniques before we get set up at the hostel. Once that’s done, we’ll head out for a skiing session above the hut.

Easy start up to Buffère Pass where we can see Serre-Chevalier Valley. After a small descent we go on the south crest of the Grand Area. The view in wonderful, we can see the highest summit around, sometimes event the Mont Blanc! A stunning descent will allow us to ski on some great snow until we reach the refuge du Chardonnet in which we’ll spend two nights.

An excursion that’ll whet our appetite for a cold beer once we get back to the hut. We head to Roche Noire (2693m) to go down in Vallon de la Moulette surrounded by huge cliffs... We’ll head back to the refuge via the "Grape Pass". Who's up for a warm vine?

Breakfast before heading out to the tour du Queyrelin. A wonderful excursion in the calm of the valley before tacking a breathtaking descent on the north face. We then reach Les Drayères'hut

There’ll be stunning panoramas over the entirety of the Parc national des Ecrins and its numerous summits including la Barre des Ecrins (4102m). If conditions are good we'll be able to get to the summit, in both case, we'll have a long descent to the Refuge Italien des Rois Mages, where wonderful evening awaits in the small hamlet Granges.

We’ll leave Italy on a full stomach and head towards the north face of the Col du Vallon versant Nord (2645m). A long and calm descent will take us back to Névache from where we’ll head back to Oulx or Briançon.

Please note: This itinerary is an example of a freeride skiing trip with Azimut and should only be used as a guide: the weather the conditions on the mountain or the competence of the participants could mean that the guide changes the itinerary, the order of the expeditions or their settings.
We always do our best, but we can't guarantee the exact time of arrival at the train station (due to traffic or weather conditions). Therefore we strongly advise you to buy train tickets that can easily be modified. If you're travelling by car, we'll meet you at the arrival point, or at one of the drop of points where you'll be able to leave your car for the entire trip.
The last day, we try to make it back to Oulx by 5 pm, but we cannot guarantee this.

Free public parking can be found in Briançon and Oulx (both unattended) or just in front of our accommodation.
The slopes may have some short steep passages. You should be at ease with ski touring techniques and skiing on all types of snow. We may also ski on glacier terrain. You should master uphill kick turns without hesitation.
Good physical condition 5/7 hours skiing per day, some short ascents on foot possible. Elevation gain between 1000m and 1500m/per day.
Good to know: If you don't have the required level, the guide might ask you to leave the group for your own safety, that of the group or the well-being of the group as a whole. Don't hesitate to ask us if you have any doubts!

A 30% deposit, as well as the insurance cost if you choose to subscribe the latter, is required to secure your booking. You will receive a reminder email 35 days prior to departure for the outstanding balance due latest 30 days prior to departure.
We strongly recommend you to be properly insured for the chosen activity. You should be covered for medical expenses, personal accident & liabilité, third party risks and rescue (helicopter), as well as trip cancellation or curtailment.
Repatriation and research insurance are mandatory when booking a trip with Azimut. We have a full range of insurances on offer to suit the trip you select and the risks that it may incur.
Tipping is no obligation. However participants usually hand round an envelope for those who wish to tip the guide.
Azimut's minibus is used throughout the whole trip. Not only does this make the trip easier, but it also makes it more pleasant and open: we can chat, sleep and listen to our own music !
During the trip
Depending on the size of group, you may share a room with someone of the opposite sex.
Before & after ski touring trips
As soon as you register, we'll send you the contact details of accommodation providers where you can spend the night before and after your trip. This accommodation is close to the meeting points and you will often benefit from a preferential rate.
Depending on your itinerary, it may be easier to join the guide at our logistics base in Cervières so that you can use our minibus to get to the starting point of the trip. On request, we can book you an overnight stay before or after your trip at the Lodge Le Petit Cerf, which is our basecamp located exactly at the same place as our agency.
Make sure to wear bright colours, it's good for the soul and gives photos a funky edge !
Ski gear (all in excellent condition)
Security advice: avalanche airbag backpacks are highly recommended.
They help to stay on the surface in case of avalanche and minimize the risk of burial. Our guides use them and we highly recommend you to opt for high quality and reliable gear. If you don't have an avalanche airbag we rent them out at a very competitive price.
If you don't have the adequate equipment for the trip, don't worry and travel light: we rent out the required gear and hand it over at the start of the trip ! Our equipment is relatively new, if not brand new, of good quality and adapted to your choice of activity.
