Pros

  • Discover the best freeride skiing Hokkaïdo has on offer
  • Very small group for a good skiing pace!
  • Breathtaking runs through birch forests
  • Well situated, quality and comfortable accommodation
  • Our minibus is our means of transportation from the airport onwards throughout the entire trip

In a nutshell

Ski touring on the island of Hokkaido is a powder destination, guaranteed by the winter monsoon, the cold Siberian air flow. The sectors are among the most accessible in the world, with terrain that is often gently sloping.

Even if the sun is sometimes shy and night falls at 4pm, the days are dense. The low altitude makes for less effort, so we 'peaute' and 'dépeaute' all the way to the death knell of the onsen...

With our wide skis, we explore these volcanoes, some of which are still active, to spatulate the craters before tumbling down the great slopes and gullies to end up in the birch and bamboo forest.

It's cold out there, but what snow and what scenery - we can't wait!

Day to day

D1- Welcome to Nippon

Welcome at Sapporo airport (New Chitose airport). Meeting with the guide and departure in our minibus for Furano. Settle in to a comfortable hotel for the next 3 nights.

Night in our accommodation in the Furano area.

D2 - Mount Sandan (1,748m)

A gentle first day. After a transfer of around 1 hour towards the east of Furano, we prepare for a great ski touring outing to Sandan-Yama in the Tokachi massif: the Mecca of the sector! We'll be discovering the Niponne snow, so famous... and rightly so!

Elevation gain: +750m / -750m

Meals included today: breakfast

Night in our accommodation in the Furano area.

Day 3 - Mount Asahidake (2,291m)

The highest point on the island of Hokkaido, Mount Asahidake is an active volcano. It's a must for any ski touring trip in northern Japan! We use the ski lift before putting on our skins. There's a long descent ahead, in a unique atmosphere: we ski among spruce, birch and bamboo trees, with superb views of the surrounding countryside.

Elevation gain: +600m / -600m

Meals included today: breakfast

Overnight in our accommodation in the Furano area.

D4 - Discovery of the Teine resort and transfer to Niseko

After breakfast, transfer to the south. Depending on the conditions, we will either make a stop at Teine station for its corridors and its incredible view of the sea or we will make a stop at Niseko.

Ascent: +500m / -500m

Meals included today: breakfast

Night in our accommodation in Niseko.

D5 - Yoteï-zan (1.898m)

After breakfast, transfer to the south-east of Niseko. THE volcano of Hokkaido, visible for miles around, beautiful and bewitching... We start out in the forest and then make our way to the flanks of the volcano, following the great combes that spill out of the summit of the crater - we'll even go all the way to the bottom! In short, we'll be volcano-skiers for a while! It will probably be necessary to finish the ascent with knives (or even crampons), as nature is sometimes hostile on this summit.

Elevation gain: + 1,500m / - 1,500m

Meals included today: breakfast

Night in our accommodation in Niseko.

Day 6 - Mount Raiden (1.211m)

The day before has left its mark on minds and bodies... a more leisurely day of skiing is on the agenda today! After breakfast, an hour's transfer to the west of Niseko. A wide, gherkinned ridge dominates a vast bowl, with the sea visible on the horizon...

Elevation gain: + 1,060m / - 1,060m

Meals included today: breakfast

Night in our accommodation in Niseko.

D7- Kiroro (1.107m)

After breakfast, we set off for the Kiroro resort to the east of Niseko. To the west of the resort, the mountain offers us some beautiful valleys, far from the crowds...

Elevation gain: + 800m / - 800m

Meals included today: breakfast

Night in our accommodation in Niseko.

D8- Good runs at Niseko Annupuri (1.308m)

Breakfast and check-out. Transfer to Chitose at the end of the day, but first we're off for some good skiing at Niseko Annupuri! Using the lifts, you can quickly reach the summit, making a change from other days... If the weather is clear, you'll have an unbeatable view of the Yoteï! A fine descent of 500m D- and then another 200m/300m to reach a nearby summit. Want some more? Let's go back up!

Elevation gain: + 600m / - 600m

Meals included today: breakfast

Overnight in our accommodation in Chitose, close to the airport for departures the following day.

Day 9 - End of the tour

After breakfast, transfer to the airport provided by the guide if the departure time is similar to the guide's (otherwise, public shuttle or taxi). End of ski touring trip in Japan.

Flight to purchase

Round trip to Sapporo - New Chitose airport (CTS) - Japan

Due to price variations, this freeride ski trip to Japan is sold without flights. It will be cheaper and easier for you to book your flights from the airport and on the dates of your choice via airline websites or booking platforms such as MisterFly, Opodo, Kayak, etc.

Beware of connecting flights in Tokyo: make sure that the transfer between the international flight and the domestic flight takes place at the same airport (Haneda or Narita).

Please note: Only buy the flights for this trip once we have confirmed that your departure is guaranteed!

Guiding

Azimut qualified mountain guide.

All our mountain guides are certified. We choose them for their sympathy, their teaching and organisational skills. We stay tuned in, work hands in hands, and make sure their working conditions are the best.

Getting around

Azimut-type minivan (rental on site).

Daypack

Bring a small day pack large enough to carry your personal belongings for the day such as (extra) clothing, a few snacks and security equipment. We strongly recommend that you wear an airbag.

Ski lifts

Considering the itinerary may be modified due to mountain and snow conditions, ski lift fares are not included in the price. The ultimate day to day itinerary will depend on local conditions. To allow flexibility ski passes will be purchased on the spot so we can easily adjust the programme. You should budget approx. 100€ for ski lift fares.

The Asahidake lifts are cash-only.

How technical does it get ? How fit should I be ?

  • Skill level

  • The slopes may have some short steep passages. You should be at ease with ski touring techniques and skiing on all types of snow. We may also ski on glacier terrain. You should master uphill kick turns without hesitation.

  • Stamina level

  • Good physical condition, some short climbs on foot possible. Elevation gain between 800m and 1000m/per day. Depending on the climbs chosen, it is often possible to make a second outing during the day, allowing those who are tired to rest and those who are not to continue skiing.

Beware, you're not playing in the skatepark in your neighbourhood: even though you're extremely keen, are craving to make first tracks in the powder snow, don't forget that this trip is far away overseas, in remote areas and rescue services may be slow and often less well organised than in your home country. So keep cool and take it easy to fully enjoy...and please avoid a back flip without knowing what's behind.

check the LEVEL table HERE

Good to know: If you don't have the level required, the guide may ask you to leave for the well-being of the rest of the group if necessary. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start.

Headwear

  • Warm hat or buff/scarf
  • Ski goggles (2 pairs) and sunglasses: UV factory 4 protective lenses. Photochromic glasses adapt to light intensity and are very useful
  • Helmet (highly recommended)

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved tops to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Take this into consideration if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Middle layer: a light polar or synthetic jacket for an extra layer of heat during breaks
  • Outer layer: a Gore-tex or similar type of jacket with a breathable waterproof membrane. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: trousers with a breathable waterproof membrane (Gore Tex or similar) with long side zips allowing air to flow, recommended on climbs
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane. Mittens are always a good idea for really cold days of for those of you who feel the cold !
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed.

Footwear

  • Ski socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Think about them if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers / Crocs recommended for evening wear.

  • 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • Pocket knife
  • Duck tape
  • Suncream, UV factor 50
