E-biking does not necessary mean you're in for a Sunday stroll with Nanny. The aim is to explore and cover distances and climbs that are commonly of elite level would we not have our e-bikes. To limit the effort going uphill also enables you to not only fully enjoy downhills, but also to do a series of downhills without having to make use of lifts.
During this 6 day e-bike course in Serre Chevalier, you'll explore the best places to ride in the Briançon area, or beyond, as on e-bikes, quite a distance can be covered !
p.s.: Slow & steady wins the e-bike race
Day 1 - Warm up
First day of this e-bike course: from Le Mônetier we head off for an easy uphill to the end of the valley all the way to the Col du Lautaret, ideal to start this trip and to explore the potential of this valley. After a few hairpins we reach the mythical Chemin du Roy, a path overlooking the valley, and ride down to the major single trail track of St Josephs forest. Downhill to Briançon via the Guisane.
Ascent/descent: + 800 m / - 1100 m
Meals included: picnic and dinner
Accomodation included: hotel
Day 2 - BBQ party
A magnificent uphill takes us to the Croix de Bretagne fortress, a section through the alpine pastures near Pied Sec, a break for pictures beside the Orceyrette lake, and then it'll be BBQ time, at Plan Peyron, before the last downhill for the day via Le Mélezin.
Ascent/descent: + 1300 m / - 1400 m
Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner
Accomodation included: hotel
Day 3 - Let go the calf that's in you
You leave from La Vachette, gateway to the Clarée valley, towards the Col du Granon where we have lunch. We follow the Peyrolle ridge on our e-bikes, with an amazing panorama of the Ecrins mountain range all the way to the Croix de Toulouse where a descent to hell awaits us.
On option, you can ride bike on the road to Serre Lan and reach the single trail track of the Bois de l'Ours. You'll have to put in some physical effort in the first uphill to save of your e-bike battery to finish off.
Time for a drnk to recover, the coming day is not a rest day...
Ascent/descent: + 1200 m or + 2000 m / - 1400 m or - 2100 m
Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner
Accomodation included: hotel
Day 4 - Criss crossing Serre Chevalier
Another big e-biking day, the aim is to traverse the Serre Chevalier ski area. We get a lift up to Puy-Saint-André where an 800 m easy going climb awaits us, we cross the Rocher Blanc ridge and then go for the first single trail of the day. No way will we stop here, we pick nick at the famous Col de la Cucumelle, the mecca for alpine freeriding. We end the day with a outlandish descent to Le Mônetier-Les-Bains. It's time to enjoy the hot springs, at Les Grands Bains, massage on option.
No need for a drink this evening, you'll fall asleep without it (preferably after dinner).
Ascent/descent: + 1900 m /- 2100 m
Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner
Accomodation included: hotel
Day 5 - Riding the Genepy valley (this stays between you & us)
On the way up to the Izoard mountain pass, we head off on an ancient military track that takes us up to the Sommet des Angles, the highlight on this trip, before a bucolic downhill in the Fonds de Cervières valley, a little gem of the Briançon area. Nothing to steep nor too technical, just right to fully enjoy this day and to spare ourselves a little for the last day.
Ascent/descent: + 1300 m /- 1100 m
Meals included: breakfast, picnic and dinner
Accomodation included: hotel
Day 6 - Névache, last but not least
Nope we're not going to say goodbye before having visited Nevache valley and the Vallée Etroite.
For this last day of the e-bike course in Serre Chevalier, you'll be dropped of at the Col de l'Echelle from where you'll tumble into Italy. From there magnificent Dolomitic style scenery, and don't think about the uphill that follows (thanks to the e-bike !). but we have to face it, you'll have to push your bikes a tiny bit to get up the mountain pass (Col des Vallons or col des Muandes, depending on your physical condition) but it's definitely worth the effort. Downhill on the Névache side and then besides the Clarée river.
Unfortunately it's time to say goodbye after a last drink under the sun whilst you wait for your transfer to Briançon or Oulx.
Ascent/descent: + 1300 m /- 1400 m
Meals included: breakfast and picnic
Please note this is an example of an e-bike course in and around Serre Chevalier valley. The guide may adjust certain itineraries according to weather conditions or participants' abilities. We kindly ask you to respect such decision.
In case practices and customs defined by the local authorities change, estimating the reasonable number of clients per guide, for safety reasons, Azimut respects these, even last minute, decisions and recommendations. Such cases are rare and mostly related to exceptional conditions in the mountains. Therefore some compensation may be requested from your side due to less participants per guide.
Please wear your cycling clothes on day 1.
We always do our best, but can't guarantee the exact time of arrival at the train station (due to traffic or weather conditions). Therefore we strongly recommend you to buy train tickets that can easily be modified. If you're travelling by car, we'll meet you at one of the indicated meeting points, or at one of the drop off points where you'll be able to leave your car for the entire trip.
Access
Make sure the train you plan to catch welcomes mountain bikes.
Car park
Public parking free of charge can be found in Briançon and Oulx (both unattended).
You should be at ease with long and demanding descents. You're able to deal with hairpin bends and tackle back-breaking inclines, master your brakes, hop over small tricky sections (tree roots, rocks, steps). Descents are often long and sustained (but progressive as the week goes on), sometimes steep, often technically demanding, sometimes exposed sections but rarely dangerous. You'll end being an expert rider or maybe even an ace in mountain biking skills !
For keen and passionate mountain bikers or sporty people, who enjoy making efforts and regularly do an outdoor activity. You are sporty, are used to go out riding for a full day at least once a week and a maybe a few shorter outings in a week, at least a few weeks before you head off for a trip with us. Our rides will take you on quite long climbs where you may sometimes even have to push or carry your bike. Expect ascents between + 800 m & + 1400 m approx per day.
Good to know: if you don't have the skills and stamina required, the guide may ask you to leave the group for the well-being of the rest of the group. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !
