We will take you to the most beautiful spots in Briançon, 6 days of pure riding just under the Ecrins glaciers and the peaks of the Hautes-Alpes!

The days are cool, we are there to enjoy, and the breaks are a privileged moment to chat with the members of the group, while bathing in a beautifuuul high altitude lake. In short, we drive, we eat well and we have fun!

Day to day

Day 1 – Warm-up and Larches party!

For this first day, reception at the Briançon SNCF station at 9 a.m.., then departure with our minibus. You're in your best mountain biking outfit for the meeting!

Today we start gently by climbing cool on a road then track, until the start of the sometimes technical, but above all very playful single of the "Mélézin", zig-zagging through the undergrowth, a pure delight! After a snack break, we switch to the opposite side, to go up to the top of a perfect path to get into the local atmosphere: The Sachas torrent and its magnificent hairpins.

A first day rich in sensations, with the favorite trails of the locals!

Then head to our little nest for a thirst-quenching debrief.

Day 2 – There are people on the balcony!

This day will satisfy your desire for freedom, landscapes, rides... We start by going up in cool mode along the bucolic Guisane valley, perfect for digesting the hearty breakfast! We travel 20km along the torrent to reach the famous Lautaret pass, with its 2042m altitude. A progressive ascent of 800m of D+, embellished with superb landscapes. After a short break facing La Meije, a short ascent and off you go for THE balcony route facing the Ecrins glaciers, the perfect mountain riding combo!

Peaceful return with a break at the Italian ice cream parlor of Briançon, THE real local star...

Day 3- Ride in Montgenevre

Direction the Montgenèvre border pass (1850m)!

The program is going to be insane! The mountain biking potential in this sector is huge. We attack with very rolling portions then a little more technical, small runs all in hairpins, a lunar and extraordinary volcanic ground, a wheel in Italy and a wheel in France!

From Collet Vert to Lac Gignoux to Chenaillet (2650m), we will reach Col de la Cochette and descend below Fort de l'Infernet towards Briançon. Yeehaaa! Go for a monumental descent of more than 1300m in altitude, where your pads like your brain will heat up so much it's good!

This route is top of the top, it can be extended in abundance for those hungry for rides!

Day 4 - Guillestrois, here we come!

On this fourth day, change of scenery! We go down to the fort of Mont-Dauphin (a must in the area) to explore the Guillestrois singles. In the footsteps of the Raid Vauban, there is no shortage of jewel tracks here, we adapt this midweek day to the form of the group. Descent in the pine forest, singles on the ridges, ride in the forest, grrrr it's going to be good!

Nota bene: a local beer for the debrief of the day can only complete the recovery!

Day 5 - Orgy of trails in Ecrins!

On the menu of the day, a tour around the magical Vallouise valley. Facing the glaciers, the singletracks will follow one another with grandiose landscapes and varied terrain. We will pass the Pousterle pass, on the Oréac plateau to finish with a majestic descent via the magnificent perched valley of Narreyroux. Gavage, you're going to take the handlebars!

Day 6 – Cervières paradise

Departure in the cool to make the most of this ultimate day of pure riding!

We ride along the French-Italian border from our base in Cervières, through breathtaking landscapes, superbly adapted to our bikes. Lakes, volcanic ridges (yes like at Salagou!) and flow to make all the hairs on your body stand on end! A coffee break at the Rifugio Mautino on the Italian side will allow you to refresh your skills. "é dilizioso!"

Back in the valley with plenty of "tyres" (it's a bit like the south here), a refreshing last debrief, with images in your head and the mad desire to come back to discover other singles!

Unfortunately, it's time to leave us, transfer to Briançon.

Get together - practical information

Please wear your cycling clothes on day 1.

We always do our best, but can't guarantee the exact time of arrival at the train station (due to traffic or weather conditions). Therefore we strongly recommend you to buy train tickets that can easily be modified. If you're travelling by car, we'll meet you at one of the indicated meeting points, or at one of the drop off points where you'll be able to leave your car for the entire trip.

Access

Make sure the train you plan to catch welcomes mountain bikes.

Public parking free of charge can be found in Briançon.

How technical does it get ? How fit should I be ?

Skill level ***

You should be at ease with long and demanding descents. You're able to deal with hairpin bends and tackle back-breaking inclines, master your brakes, hop over small tricky sections (tree roots, rocks, steps). Descents are often long and sustained (but progressive as the week goes on), sometimes steep, often technically demanding, sometimes exposed sections but rarely dangerous. You'll end being an expert rider or maybe even an ace in mountain biking skills !

Stamina level ***

For keen and passionate mountain bikers or sporty people, who enjoy making efforts and regularly do an outdoor activity. You are sporty, are used to go out riding for a full day at least once a week and a maybe a few shorter outings in a week, at least a few weeks before you head off for a trip with us. Our rides will take you on quite long climbs where you may sometimes even have to push or carry your bike. Expect ascents between + 800 m & + 1300 m approx per day.

Good to know: if you don't have the skills and stamina required, the guide may ask you to leave the group for the well-being of the rest of the group. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !

All our mountain bike guides are certified instructors. We choose them for their sympathy, their teaching and organisational skills. We stay tuned in, work hands in hands, and make sure their working conditions are the best.

Daypack

Bring a small day pack large enough (for more detailed advice see gear section) to carry your personal belongings for the day such as (extra) layers, a few snacks, your picnic and a repair kit. All other personal gear not needed for the day will be transferred to our accommodation.

Payment

A 30% deposit, as well as the insurance cost if you choose to subscribe the latter, is required to secure your booking. You will receive a reminder email 35 days prior to departure for the outstanding balance that is due latest 30 days prior to departure. 

Insurance

We strongly recommend you to be properly insured for the chosen activity. You should be covered for medical expenses, personal accident & liabilité, third party risks and rescue (helicopter), as well as trip cancellation or curtailment.

Repatriation and research insurance are mandatory when booking a trip with Azimut. We have a full range of insurances with our partner, on offer to suit the trip you select and the risks that it may incur (beware, such insurance only covers European citizens). 

Tipping

Tipping is no obligation. However participants usually hand round an envelope for those who wish to tip the guide.

Getting around

Azimut's minibuses are used throughout the trip. Not only does this make the trip easier, but it also makes it more pleasant and less binding: we can chat, take a nap and listen to our own music. If luggage transfers are necessary, you have the possibility to use the transfer if you're tired and for any other reason.

Accommodation & meals

During the trip

This trip takes place in our Lodge nestled in the village of Cervières at the foot of the Col d'Izoard. You will be looked after by Isabelle and her team, who will offer you an exceptional welcome and a living space designed to help you spend some quality time in peace and quiet. The food is simple, natural and of high quality, with a choice of good beers and wines. Rental equipment is located under the hotel, and our agency and team are just a stone's throw away. The lodge is made up of "lodge" rooms for a maximum of 3 people with shared WC and showers + hotel-style rooms with WC and shower (single or double room option on request).

Depending on the composition of the group, you may be with someone of the opposite sex.

- Single hotel on a half-board basis, in a double room to be shared, toilet and shower in the room, sheets provided, towels provided! Depending on the configuration of the group and availability, we may use a triple room.

- Single supplement (with en-suite facilities): €282/person (to be chosen at the time of registration, availability will be confirmed as soon as possible)

- Double room supplement (with en-suite facilities): €120/person (to be chosen at the time of registration; availability will be confirmed as soon as possible).

- Breakfast and dinner are taken in the hotel restaurant.

- Lunches are free, leaving the group free to choose between different formulas or locations. The food is one of the strong points of freeride ski trips, we know all the good addresses of trattorias, nice little restaurants etc... Trust us!

- Snacks: The details are important, especially during the effort. We've chosen to supply tasty, high-quality cereal bars.

*If the Lodge is unavailable, the stay will take place in a comfortable gîte in the Briançonnais area.

 

Accomodation before & after bike trips

Once we've received your booking, we'll provide you with a list of accomodation in case you need to book accomodation before or after the trip. All accomodation on the list is close to the meeting points and you may often benefit from preferential rates.

Equipment - clothing & gear

Make sure to wear bright colours, it's good for the soul and give photos a funky edge !

Technical gear

  • Mountain bike: all mountain type or enduro bike, with platform pedals or your own clip-in pedals (that we can mount on a rental bike)
  • E-bikes: please remember to charge your battery for day 1
  • Backpack with a 20-25 liter capacity max
  • Helmet & sunglasses are mandatory
  • Mountain biking gloves (an extra pair of warm gloves can be useful)
  • Knee and elbow protectors are highly recommended
  • Low hiking shoes with flat soles, or your shoes for your clip-in pedals
  • Repair kit including a set of brake pads (that match your brakes), a spare derailleur hanger, a quick link for your own chain, a pump, self adhesive patches, inner tubes with the right dimensions and anything else that may be specific to your bike.

 

If you don't have the adequate gear for this trip, don't worry and travel light: we rent out the required gear and hand it over at the start of the trip ! Our equipment is relatively new, if not brand new, of good quality and adapted to your choice of activity.

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes that it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start. Prefer lightweight warm and comfortable clothing. This is not just a detail, it makes a hell of a difference ! 

Headwear

  • Sunglasses and glasses with clear lenses for forest sections and cloudy days (it's important to protect your eyes). Photochromic lenses adapt to light intensity and protection categories range from 1 to 3 or 2 to 4 to optimize visibility from shade to brightness. Very useful.
  • A buff and/or thin beanie that you can put under your helmet if it's cold.

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved top as well as leggings to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Have this in mind if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Outer layer: a light fleece jacket and/or a light hooded down jacket that you can put under a jacket that has a breathable waterproof membrane (soft shell type or Goretex), easy to slip on during a break. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: mountain biking shorts and leggings in case it gets cold
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane.
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed in pools or hot water springs baths.
  • Good to have: an extra t-shirt in your bike backpack, appreciated after a big sweat on an uphill ride).

Footwear

  • Bike socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Remember this if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers or crocs are recommended for evening wear.

Odds & ends

  • a duffle bag holding up to 90 litres to leave at the gîte, avoid suitcases.

If you don't follow the latter recommendation, you'll most probably kick yourself when you get back!
