Day to day

Day 1 - Let's get to know each other on our bikes and ride Granon's pass

On day 1 we meet you either at Briançon train station at 9 am or at Oulx-Cesana TGV train station at 8:15 am, then set off with our minibus. You should be wearing your cycling outfit.

Today is the chance to slowly get acclimatised after checking gear, reviewing a few core techniques such as braking, position on bike and security matters... Riders ready ?

We get dropped off near the Granon and are in for 2 or 3 big runs... Epic !

The last run will require a little effort but will be highly rewarded with hot springs and cold beer.

And let's not over do it, and save some energy for the coming days...

Ascent/descent: + 450 m / - 2900 m

Meals included: dinner

Accommodation included: gite

Day 2 - Down into the Montgenèvre juniper trees !

What can we celebrate today (there's something to celebrate everyday...) as our shuttle takes us up to Montgenèvre (1850 m)... for a hectic day ?!

The potential for mountain biking here is huge. We start off with a quite easy ride before tackling some more technical, small hairpin runs, on extraordinary moon-like terrain, one wheel in Italy, the other in France.

Collet Verte, Gignoux lake, over to Chenaillet (2650 m) we reach the Cochette mountain pass and end up under the Infernet fortress not far from Briançon... the ultimate goal of today, hurtling down the mountain from 2650 m to 1300 m, so simple and quite straight forward !

This itinerary is just one of the best and can potentially be prolonged if necessary... we'll decide together !

Our driver will takes us back to basecamp after cooling down with a refreshing scoop of ice cream or an ice cold beer.

Ascent/descent: + 850 m / - 1800 m

Meals included: breakfast, dinner

Accommodation included: gite

Day 3 - Puy St Vin-sane just insane !

On today's menu: drop off Col de Pousterle for a descent to L'Argentière, or to the bottom of the Vallouise valley, down one of the local upper class trails.

Downhills follow one another at a furious pace. Looking for hairpin corners, playground fun and orgasmic riding ? Here you go !

Last but not least... Drop off at Puy Saint Vincent, from where we chase over to Narreyroux's run, a must here. Sit back and enjoy the ride, it's smoother than a smoothie...! Stop licking your chops !

Ascent/descent: + 150 m / - 2800 m

Meals included: breakfast, dinner

Accommodation included: gite

Day 4 - Take it easy but don't forget your date with the mélèze

Day 4, this morning we take it easy to charge our batteries, you can either take time to visit the magnificent old town of Briançon with the Vauban forts, definitely worth the detour, or explore the area around basecamp on your bike for those who're overmotivated.

Early afternoon, we head off to 2 local favourites: Torrent de Sashas et Le Mélezin. After a short section pedalling, we wind through the woodlands and along a canal, using a playful single trail that threads down to the bottom of the valley.

Our minibus will be waiting for you to take you to the locals' "after-work" trails ! We'll end this day in front of a delicious ice cream with some local flavours to taste. How about génépi or mélèze ?

Ascent/descent: + 300 m / - 1400 m

Meals included: breakfast, dinner.

Accommodation included: gite

Day 5 - Beware of overheating brake pads !

Today we'll be riding near Freissinières and Pra Reboul. Never heard of these places ? That's normal, it's totally off the beaten track, just trust us. You'll see we know what we're talking about :)

We'll follow the Tramouillon trail which is kind of sexy and for the rest... sit back, ride, and just wait and see ! Shuttle and pads are likely to overheat !

Ascent/descent: + 800 m / - 2400 m

Meals included: breakfast, dinner.

Accommodation included: gite

Day 6 - Highlights of this week: Galibier & chemin du Roy

For the last day of this enduro course in the Ecrins, our minibus transfers us up to the Galibier pass - thanks driver - from where we start this day in style down to Mortavieille valley, in Savoy. Our shuttles then drops us of at the Baraques des Mottets from where we ride up the ultimate section to the Cerces mirror. Just one more little effort up the challenging trail that leads to the Ponsonnière mountain pass... where the views are stunning. And so is the descent ! We end up on the nearly classic Chemin du Roy trail before hitting the last beautiful descent to Monetier and its springs, where we can have a well deserved drink.

At the end of the afternoon: transfer to Oulx-Cesana. End of trip.

Ascent/dscent: + 700 m /- 2100 m

Meals included: breakfast

Please note this is an example of an enduro mountain biking course. The guide may adjust certain itineraries according to weather conditions or participants' abilities. We kindly ask you to respect such decision.

In case practices and customs defined by the local authorities change, estimating the reasonable number of clients per guide, for safety reasons, Azimut respects these, even last minute, decisions and recommendations. Such cases are rare and mostly related to exceptional conditions in the mountains. Therefore some compensation may be requested from your side due to less participants per guide.

Car park

How technical does it get ? How fit should I be ?

  • Skill level ***

You should be at ease with long and demanding descents. You're able to deal with hairpin bends and tackle back-breaking inclines, master your brakes, hop over small tricky sections (tree roots, rocks, steps). Descents are often long and sustained (but progressive as the week goes on), sometimes steep, often technically demanding, sometimes exposed sections but rarely dangerous. You'll end being an expert rider or maybe even an ace in mountain biking skills !

  • Stamina level ***

For keen and passionate mountain bikers or sporty people, who enjoy making efforts and regularly do an outdoor activity. You are sporty, are used to go out riding for a full day at least once a week and a maybe a few shorter outings in a week, at least a few weeks before you head off for a trip with us. Our rides will take you on quite long climbs where you may sometimes even have to push or carry your bike. Expect ascents between + 800 m & + 1400 m approx per day.

Good to know: if you don't have the skills and stamina required, the guide may ask you to leave the group for the well-being of the rest of the group. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes that it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start. Prefer lightweight warm and comfortable clothing. This is not just a detail, it makes a hell of a difference !

Headwear

  • Sunglasses and glasses with clear lenses for forest sections and cloudy days (it's important to protect your eyes). Photochromic lenses adapt to light intensity and protection categories range from 1 to 3 or 2 to 4 to optimize visibility from shade to brightness. Very useful.
  • A buff and/or thin beanie that you can put under your helmet if it's cold.

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved top as well as leggings to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Have this in mind if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Outer layer: a light fleece jacket and/or a light hooded down jacket that you can put under a jacket that has a breathable waterproof membrane (soft shell type or Goretex), easy to slip on during a break. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: mountain biking shorts and leggings in case it gets cold
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane.
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed in pools or hot water springs baths.
  • Good to have: an extra t-shirt in your bike backpack, appreciated after a big sweat on an uphill ride).

Footwear

  • Bike socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Remember this if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers or crocs are recommended for evening wear.

Odds & ends

  • a 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • a pocket knife
  • duck tape
  • factor 50 suncream
  • a duffle bag holding up to 90 litres to leave at the gîte, avoid suitcases.

Toiletries and first aid kit

  • Personal toilet bag
  • To make up your a first aid kit, check out the Ifremmont website.

And last but not least...

Don't forget to

  • Leave our contact details with your friends and family
  • Bring your papers and I.D. (passport and visa if necessary)
  • Bring your insurance contract number and documents (if you've chosen not to have insure coverage with us)
  • Bring your “carte vitale” or your European health card (for EU citizens) - if you don't have one you can order one for free online  www.ameli.fr
  • Check that you have the right equipment
  • Take spare batteries and a charger for your electronic devices such as camera, video recorder
  • Bring some cash and your credit card
  • Bring a delicacy from your home country or area to share with the group
  • Leave in a good frame of mind: we're going to have a great time even if we may not happen to not make it to the summit !
  • Before leaving: water the plants, empty the rubbish bin, turn off water and gas, and tell your partner that you're going to have a good time (please not by text message), that you've well deserved... If you don't follow the latter recommendation, you'll most probably kick yourself when you get back!
