In a nutshell

Welcome to our home ! Yes, Azimut agency is based in Cervières in the Hautes-Alpes, a stone's throw from Italy. And here, we have selected the best of the best in terms of ski touring, between the Ecrins, Col d'Izoard and the Italian Piedmont. It's very simple: you're going to enjoy yourself, just bring a few extra things in case you don't want to go back...

During this ski touring trip, we are based on the French-Italian border, allowing us to vary a lot the grounds, the pleasures, the views and to gravitate like a Newton's pendulum on one side or the other: according to the conditions and the desire of the group! You can imagine, we have all the good addresses (yes, it sometimes happens to us to go out) to put some in the belly, to recover from our efforts, and to hydrate well.

From January 15, 2023 you will be lodged in our Lodge! A small, simple, cosy hotel, nestled in the valley of the Izoard pass, in a wild and preserved setting. The lodge is mainly dedicated to ski and mountain bike activities, the workshop and the stock of equipment is just below, the Azimut agency and all the staff, not far (not far from the bar too). The large room downstairs allows you to chill out, have a drink by the fireplace, or spend a relaxing day in the lounge areas, in the sun. The cuisine is simple, local to the max and delicious. The welcome and the service is our obsession: you will be in good hands, trust us... So much so that going home will seem complicated.

Day to day

Day 1 - Welcome and warm up on the Piedmont side!

Welcome at the train station of Briançon.

Meeting with the guide and departure by minibus. We aim at the Cima del Bosco (2377 m) SW side from the beautiful village of Thures (1633 m) or the N side of Monte Giaseez for a good warm up and the revision of the bases of ski touring. It's the first day, relax, the setting up, the distribution of the equipment can take a little time, but don't worry, you'll be skiing all week long! Today is also a day to evaluate the level of each one. No pressure, we learn to know ourselves.

On the way back, we take advantage of it to make a stop in a typical village. Debriefing and installation in our cosy nest.

Elevation gain +/- 800m

Meals included this day : Picnic - Dinner

Lodging included this day : hotel or gîte comfort

D2 - Ski touring at Azimut, made to measure!

Our ghetto is Cervières. Capital of the potato (yes it is). Nestled at the foot of the Col d'Izoard. There are many itineraries (and you want some: we know you). We have tested them all, and we will adapt your outing to the motivation of the group, the orientation and the conditions of the moment: Cime de la Charvie (2881m), Côte Belle and its crests, Grand Peygu, Col des Portes...

Elevation gain +/-1000 to 1250 m

Meals included this day : Breakfast - Picnic - Dinner

Lodging included this day : hotel or gîte comfort

D3 - Ski touring at Mont Chaberton 3131m

Fed by the returns from the East, this French summit, which was taken from the Italians during the last war, dominates the area opposite its friend Mont Thabor (3178m). A real geological and historical bastion, the panorama and the variety of skiing it offers are worth the effort of the climb! If the conditions do not allow its ascent, a retreat to another military post, the fort of Lenlon in Clarée will be a nice option, wild and not frequented! In short, a day that you will not forget ...

Elevation gain +/-1250m

Meals included this day : Breakfast - Picnic - Dinner

Lodging included this day : hotel or gîte comfort

D4 - La Vallouise, the magic trunk of the locals

Why? Simply because the shape of this valley protects it from the wind and sometimes, while everywhere else the conditions are not great, we take out of the trunk of the still powdery routes. The Blanche (2914m) from Puy Aillaud is a classic for us and we never get tired of it, you will understand why!

Meals included this day : Breakfast - Picnic - Dinner

Lodging included this day : hotel or lodge comfort

D5 - The wild Clarée Valley

Canadian atmosphere guaranteed as we drive towards Névache, a village marking the end of the road in winter. From here, there are several options as well, with the Grand Aréa (2869m) on the north side, crossing the beautiful Eichaillon ridges, or towards the Pic du Lac Blanc (2980m) in a loop from southwest to southeast. Between grandiose panoramas, ruinous reliefs and typical cliffs of the Hautes-Alpes, majestic descent ... We are well at home!

Elevation gain +/-1250 to 1350m

Meals included this day : Breakfast - Picnic - Dinner

Lodging included this day : hotel or lodge comfort

D6 - The Morefreddo (2770 m) in Italy

A beautiful ascent awaits us! From Pattemouche, we put on the skis and it is gone for the beautiful Morefreddo. Once we take some height, above the larches, we reach quickly the wide crest which leads us to the summit. Panoramic view on the valley and the nearby mountains assured! End of the training course of ski touring in the afternoon. We leave each other already after a short transfer towards the places of dispersion, memories full the eyes, lactic acid full the thighs (do not worry, we have a good remedy to drain that).

Elevation gain +/- 1150 m

Meals included this day: Breakfast, picnic

This is an example of a ski touring program in the Briançonnais and Italian Piedmont. The weather and snow conditions as well as the level of the participants can lead the guide to modify it or to do some itineraries in a different order. We ask you to respect his choices. We may also have to change accommodation, within the same range, for logistical or availability reasons.

Make sure to wear bright colours, it's good for the soul and gives photos a funky edge !

Ski gear (all in excellent condition)

  • Ski touring skis with appropriate bindings. We recommend freeride type skis so you can enjoy skiing powdery descents and skiing on all types of snow
  • Ski skins

  • Ski touring boots
  • Avalanche kit: transceiver, shovel and probe (please let us know if you have your own, if not we lend them for free)

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start.

Headwear

  • Warm hat or buff/scarf
  • Ski goggles (2 pairs) and sunglasses: UV factory 4 protective lenses. Photochromic glasses adapt to light intensity and are very useful
  • Helmet (strongly recommended)

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved tops to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Take this into consideration if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Middle layer: a light polar or synthetic jacket for an extra layer of heat during breaks
  • Outer layer: a Gore-tex or similar type of jacket with a breathable waterproof membrane. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: trousers with a breathable waterproof membrane (Gore Tex or similar) with long side zips allowing air to flow, recommended on climbs
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane. Mittens are always a good idea for really cold days of for those of you who feel the cold
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed.

Footwear

  • Ski socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Think about them if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers recommended for evening wear. Try charentaises they're really comfortable !

Odds & ends

  • a 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • a pocket knife
  • duck tape
  • factor 50 sun cream
  • a duffle bag holding up to 90 litres to leave at the hotel or in a vehicle. No suitcases.

Toiletries and first aid kit

  • Personal toilet bag
  • To make up a first aid kit, please find all relevant information on the Ifremmont website.

In partnership with

Our guides use the following brands for their gear and you'll have the opportunity to test them during the trip:

And last but not least...

Don't forget to:

  • Bring your papers and I.D. (passport and visa if necessary)
  • Bring your contract number and documents related to your insurance (if you've chosen not to have insure coverage through Azimut)
  • Bring your “carte vitale” and your European health card (EU member states) - if you don't have one you can order one free of charge online  www.ameli.fr
  • Check that you have the right equipment
  • Take spare batteries and a charger for your electronic devices (camera, video recorder, tracking devices etc)
  • Bring some cash and your credit card
  • Bring a delicacy from your home country or area to share with the group
  • Leave in a good frame of mind: we're going to have a great time even if we happen to not make it to the summit !
  • Before leaving: water the plants, empty the rubbish bin, turn off water and gas, and tell your partner that you're going to have a good time (please not by text message), that you've well deserved... If you don't follow the latter recommendation, you'll most probably kick yourself when you get back !
