In a nutshell

Are you tired of rain and cold? Do you want sunshine, beautiful temperatures all year round, to enjoy the Mediterranean while riding your bike in a tshirt, even in the middle of winter? Come with us, we will pamper you on the French Riviera!

L'Estérel, this massif of red rock so characteristic, we will make you discover it in length, in width and yes even in cross! No skidding promised, it wears out the "peuneus" (with the southern accent, tè!). Close your eyes, imagine: a wide road, you with your hair in the wind, riding your E-bike in the sun with the sea as far as the eye can see! But the particularity of this place is that it is ultra exotic: eucalyptus forests, a volcanic rock that lights up your pupils, refreshing canyons and even some mischievous kangaroos! No we didn't abuse the pastis (hiiips swear), you will be really surprised by this exceptional environment!

And after a swimming break in a wild creek, we can play a game of pétanque at the hotel or prolong the pleasure at the edge of the idyllic pool! Come and enjoy the Mediterranean sun, we'll take care of everything!

Day to day

Day 1 : Getting started in the land of cicadas

Welcome at the train station of Briançon or at the TGV station of Aix. You are in your best mountain bike outfit for the meeting!

Just out of the van, presentation, little check of the equipment and let's go to discover our first hills! We make turn the gambettes gently, we are there to relax and to have fun. We are going to go up slowly to border the Gorges of Pennafort until the top of the rocks of Colle Rousse. From there we will be able to admire our first point of view on the Mediterranean Sea!

Take a break near a lake, and we're off to our fabulous hotel where we'll spend the next 5 nights!

Day 2 : Panoramas of the Mont Vinaigre

We start very softly today (to digest the breakfast), direction the Mont Vinaigre and its immense panorama on all the French Riviera! Open your eyes wide, you'll be able to see the whole alpine chain and the beautiful Corsica!

On the way back to the hotel, we'll discover beautiful wild valleys typical of the Esterel by traaanquiiil tracks (notice the accent, tè, we'll keep it!). And how about a good game of pétanque before the aperitif? Yes our hotel has a bowling alley, this is the south!

Deniv: +590m / -590m

Distance: 24km

Meals included this day: breakfast, dinner

Day 3 : Take your swimsuit, it will be great!

From the hotel, we will go down in a magnificent valley to join two small lakes which could almost make us believe that we are in Australia! We have the same rock, the eucalyptus, it misses only the crocodiles! Don't worry, we won't swim to check... We are going to go up to a pass (186m of altitude, whouuhouuuu!) to let us carry until the sea and to join Agay. Known for its roadstead and its beaches, we are going to taste anyway the joys of the bathing in the Mediterranean Sea! And also a good ice cream to refresh your taste buds, what do you say?

That's the Azimut spirit: settle down, enjoy life, meet new people and have a smile on your face, all this while riding a bike! "What else" as Georges says... not your uncle, the actor!

Day 4: In the heart of the chicken (rosemary sauce!)

Small transfer in van today to save our forces! (Hehe, we save our energy for the swimming pool of the hotel!)

We take you in the heart of the massif, which makes all the charm of the Esterel: eucalyptus forests, wild canyons, unusual points of view, an atmosphere so exotic that you will travel for good! From small passes to delicious valleys, your retinas should sparkle with happiness on this anthology day!

Day 5 : Red & blue exotic ride

Today, a small transfer to the west of the massif around the Pic de l'Ours! And although this plantigrade is in the spotlight, if you open your eyes wide you might see some kangaroos! Yes, some of them have been collected in semi-liberty here and are enjoying themselves as in their original habitat. But even better, the panoramic views over the bay of Cannes and the entire French Riviera are worth the trip! At almost 500m above the waves, the view is insane, and the trails to get there are cool, ideal to get away, enjoy and chat with the group and the guide.

After a nice balcony walk, we'll go and see the Ecureuil lake (fan of animals at Azimut t'as vu?) and then go back up to the Baisse des Sangliers and take a look at it!

Day 6 : Canyon du Reyran

For this last day in the sun (yes the return will be hard but you will come back to sing with the cicadas very quickly!) we will make a nice loop around the Reyran ravine. Around the ruins of the dam of Malpasset, the stroll will be soft and restful, rich in history and landscapes.

Back to the van, we put on our best music and hop back to the dispersal points, by giving us appointment for other extraordinary adventures!

How technical does it get ? How fit should I be ?

  • Skill level ***

You should be at ease with long and demanding descents. You're able to deal with hairpin bends and tackle back-breaking inclines, master your brakes, hop over small tricky sections (tree roots, rocks, steps). Descents are often long and sustained (but progressive as the week goes on), sometimes steep, often technically demanding, sometimes exposed sections but rarely dangerous. You'll end being an expert rider or maybe even an ace in mountain biking skills !

  • Stamina level ***

For keen and passionate mountain bikers or sporty people, who enjoy making efforts and regularly do an outdoor activity. You are sporty, are used to go out riding for a full day at least once a week and a maybe a few shorter outings in a week, at least a few weeks before you head off for a trip with us. Our rides will take you on quite long climbs where you may sometimes even have to push or carry your bike. Expect ascents between + 600 m & + 900 m approx per day.

Good to know: if you don't have the skills and stamina required, the guide may ask you to leave the group for the well-being of the rest of the group. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes that it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start. Prefer lightweight warm and comfortable clothing. This is not just a detail, it makes a hell of a difference !

Headwear

  • Sunglasses and glasses with clear lenses for forest sections and cloudy days (it's important to protect your eyes). Photochromic lenses adapt to light intensity and protection categories range from 1 to 3 or 2 to 4 to optimize visibility from shade to brightness. Very useful.
  • A buff and/or thin beanie that you can put under your helmet if it's cold.

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved top as well as leggings to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Have this in mind if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Outer layer: a light fleece jacket and/or a light hooded down jacket that you can put under a jacket that has a breathable waterproof membrane (soft shell type or Goretex), easy to slip on during a break. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: mountain biking shorts and leggings in case it gets cold
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane.
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed in pools or hot water springs baths.
  • Good to have: an extra t-shirt in your bike backpack, appreciated after a big sweat on an uphill ride).

Footwear

  • Bike socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Remember this if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers or crocs are recommended for evening wear. Try charentaises they're really comfy ! www.charentaises.fr

Odds & ends

  • a 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • a pocket knife
  • duck tape
  • factor 50 suncream
  • a duffle bag holding up to 90 litres to leave at the gĂ®te, avoid suitcases.

Toiletries and first aid kit

  • Personal toilet bag
  • To make up your a first aid kit, check out the Ifremmont website.

And last but not least...

Don't forget to

  • Bring your papers and I.D. (passport and visa if necessary)
  • Bring your insurance contract number and documents (if you've chosen not to have insure coverage with us)
  • Bring your “carte vitale” or your European health card (for EU citizens) - if you don't have one you can order one for free online  www.ameli.fr
  • Check that you have the right equipment
  • Take spare batteries and a charger for your electronic devices such as camera, video recorder, tracking devices
  • Bring some cash and your credit card
  • Leave in a good frame of mind: we're going to have a great time even if we may not happen to not make it to the summit !
  • Before leaving: water the plants, empty the rubbish bin, turn off water and gas, and tell your partner that you're going to have a good time (please not by text message), that you've well deserved... If you don't follow the latter recommendation, you'll most probably kick yourself when you get back!
