Who has never heard of the legendary Chamonix - Zermatt Haute Route ? Skiing made its reputation, but mountain biking also has a place here ! And for good reason: we're off riding for 7 days on a e-bike at the foot of mythical summits of the Valais, Switzerland on easy riding ascending paths and all kind of magnificent single downhill trails. Neverending single trails with sometimes 2000 m downhill alternating between single trails overlooking valleys at the base of one of the numerous 4000 m summits of the area, pure technical riding through alpine pastures, hairpin bends above the Rhône valley, technical sections through larch forests. Everything you're looking for in a nutshell, from 2600 m above sea level down to 400 m ! We even allow ourselves to take a few ski lifts to make even more of the descents ! To enjoy the riding even more, you'll only have your daypack, we take care of the rest ! After a good day's cycling, there's nothing better than a delicious hearty meal and a good bed. That works out well as that's exactly what we've planned, we've booked rooms in a hotel with a warm welcome and homemade local cuisine and very comfortable rooms to be in good shape for the next day ! We have not revealed everything, there are still heaps of surprises all along this trip, but you'll have to take part of it, if you want to know more...
Day 1 - E-biking to Champex lake
On this first e-bike day we have an easy start. We meet up at Les Houches train station of the Chavants parking. You should be wearing your cycling gear. To start off we have an uphill section to Le Tour so can get used to your new bike and gear without pressure, and get to know the group. We continue our climb on an easy riding track though steeper, that leads up to the col de Balme and the Croix de fer, today's highest point. Highest point also means a downhill section is ahead of us. We plunge down of magnificent single trail that leads to Trient (yes, we're in Switzerland now !). We continue onto the Forclaz mountain pass where we follow a trail overlooking the valley that leads towards the Champex valley. After an ultimate technical descent and an easy going uphill section we reach our hotel in Champex le Lac from where we have a magic view of tomorrow's route.

But we're up here for the descent: a 1200 m downhill to Le Châble. From there we catch two lifts uphill to reach the Col des Mines easilier. A last single trail and a track take us to the ancient Saxon bisse (what on earth is this ? just wait and see !) where our hotel is located amidst the Swiss alpine pastures.

It's the highest point in altitude of one of the most beautiful trips in the Valais area, well known for its 2000 m descent from Nax to Pramagnon called "the Brazilian". That's great, as that's just what we're up to ! After this overdose we'll be able to recover in the cable car that takes us to Vercorin. Please note this is an example of an e-bike trip around the Mont Blanc, on the Mont Blanc trails. The guide may adjust certain itineraries according to weather conditions, cable cars and mountain hut accessibilty as well as participants' abilities. We kindly ask you to respect such decision.
In case practices and customs defined by the local authorities change, estimating the reasonable number of clients per guide, for safety reasons, Azimut respects these, even last minute, decisions and recommendations. Such cases are rare and mostly related to exceptional conditions in the mountains. Therefore some compensation may be requested from your side due to less participants per guide.
Please wear your cycling clothes on day 1.
We always do our best, but can't guarantee the exact time of arrival at the train station (due to traffic or weather conditions). Therefore we strongly recommend you to buy train tickets that can easily be modified. If you're travelling by car, we'll meet you at one of the indicated meeting points, or at one of the drop off points where you'll be able to leave your car for the entire trip.
Access
Make sure the train you plan to catch welcomes mountain bikes.
Car park
Public parking free of charge can be found in Briançon and Oulx (both unattended).
You should be at ease with long and demanding descents. You're able to deal with hairpin bends and tackle back-breaking inclines, master your brakes, hop over small tricky sections (tree roots, rocks, steps). Descents are often long and sustained (but progressive as the week goes on), sometimes steep, often technically demanding, sometimes exposed sections but rarely dangerous. You'll end being an expert rider or maybe even an ace in mountain biking skills !
For keen and passionate mountain bikers or sporty people, who enjoy making efforts and regularly do an outdoor activity. You are sporty, are used to go out riding for a full day at least once a week and a maybe a few shorter outings in a week, at least a few weeks before you head off for a trip with us. Our rides will take you on quite long climbs where you may sometimes even have to push or carry your bike. Expect ascents between + 800 m & + 1400 m approx per day.
Good to know: if you don't have the skills and stamina required, the guide may ask you to leave the group for the well-being of the rest of the group. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !
