In a nutshell

You're a mountain biker and are eager to do some great rides in sun-bike & happy-hour style ? You're keen to explore and get around and about on your bike with a moderate effort to fully enjoy the superb descents in amazingly colourful landscapes ?

On offer we have 5 days e-biking, in a close to Mediterranean climate on extremely varied trails through pine forests, picture-postcard villages, lavander fields, vineyards, black dirt trails, cliffs and mountains... The order of the trip is a fun and relaxed atmosphere, just the way we like it, where "after bike" sessions cooling down and chilling out are no less important (after all, this is "Clairette" country, a sparkling white wine, and we're not just sucking ice cubs). Just follow the guide, he has more than one trick in his camelback, and enjoy ! And basecamp ? It's a nice, comfortable and clean hotel with twin rooms ! This enduro course is open to occasional mountain bikers feeling at ease, as well as confirmed or expert mountain bikers who simply want to take it easy.

Come on, need more to convince you to come e-biking with us in this ever so charming area where you can put on your crocs after each session and come just as you are ?

Friends, family or just colleagues at work ?

You wish to customize one of our trips, among friends and at your own convenience ? No problem, contact us so we can adapt a trip to suit you, right down to the last detail ! Our trips are tailor-made so giving you what you want is as easy as 123.

Day to day

Day 1 - Gentle warm up, woodlands and trails overlooking the valley !

On the 1st day of this e-bike enduro course we pick you up at the train station either in Briançon, Pont de Claix or Die. After checking gear, review basic techniques such as position on bike, braking techniques, and safety aspects...riders ready ? Watch the gate !

We head off from Die, start pedalling at an easy pace on a track that gently climbs up through vineyards and lavander fields, a perfect chance to get to know each other and get warmed up ! This loop takes us through rolling countryside via Romeyer, Chamaloc and the Marignac-en-Diois grasslands. Our itinerary takes us up and over mountain passes, a nice little trail slightly overhanging the valley under the pine trees then through fields, a river crossing and finishes off with a superb easy riding and playful descent...a nice sample of the variety of single trails that can be found in Die country.

Ready for a mandatory drink and debrief under the sun...before we head back to basecamp ?

Ascent/descent: + 650 m/- 650 m approx

Distance: 35 km approx

Meals included : dinner

Accomodation included: hotel

Day 2 - A salient ride in Saillans !

Second day in the woodlands, pasturelands and mountains around Saillans ! Today is a good chance to improve positions and techniques with your favourite guide. We head off to La Chapelle Saint Christophe on a forest track, then up to the Pourcheton mountain pass on a single trail. This is followed by the Chaudenage gully, nothing but fun ! From there we head off to the Vallons mountain pass and Les Rayes. The climb is tough, and admit it, it's quite cool to have powered assistance, to fully appreciate the upcoming views ! We're in for a luxurious style picnic with panoramic views, and then it's time for the last leg: a magnificent descent to Saillans over nice terraces, soft and clean needle terrain.

We finish off this outing with home made ice cream, and our feet soaking in crystal clear water... Once back in Die, we can stroll on our bikes in its lively streets and visit the charming ancient roman town.

Ascent/descent: + 1000 m/- 1000 m approx

Distance: 25 km approx

Meals included : breakfast, dinner

Accomodation included: hotel

Day 3 - An epic loop around Beauvoisin summit

This is our favourite day ! After a good nights sleep, we set off from Die on small roads and a track along the Drôme river to the Pont de la Griotte, and ride up to the Croix de Justin. This is followed by a grassy track and small path from where we reach a single trail, not too narrow nor too technical that overlooks the valley with magnificent views of the Diois and the Vercors. This links up with a windy trail once again overlooking the valley, nice and smooth, perfect to have fun riding your e-bike. A downhill section takes us to the start of a trail with some humps to deal with before we get to some ideal riding terrain consisting of black marly lands. Typical of this area, riding here is great fun... Back to Die, sparkling with joy ! Last evening out here, worth having a drink isn't it ?

Ascent/descent: + 1000 m/- 1000 m approx

Distance: 29 km approx

Meals included : breakfast, dinner

Accomodation included: hotel

Day 4 - Cabre mountain pass (1180 m), between Hautes-Alpes and Drôme

For this fourth day, we gain height ! We leave Beaurières and zig zag on a trail up to the mountain pass. After a short delicate but not risky section, let's enjoy the amazing views... And hop, we hurtle down a beautiful trail in the woodlands, this is part of the "Chemins du Soleil".  Once we get to Val-Maravel, we continue on to Lesches-en-Diois, to make the most of some small wild trails.

Back to the valley for a nice refreshing drink to end up this trip ! Transfer to your initial meeting points.

Ascent/descent: + 1000 m/- 1000 m approx

Distance: 30 km approx

Meals included : breakfast

Day 5 : Work in progress !

Please note this itinerary is an example of a mountain biking trip and course in the Diois area (Drôme) and surroundings. The guide may adjust certain itineraries according to weather conditions, cable cars and mountain hut accessibilty as well as participants' abilities. We kindly ask you to respect such decision.

In case practices and customs defined by the local authorities change, estimating the reasonable number of clients per guide, for safety reasons, Azimut respects these, even last minute, decisions and recommendations. Such cases are rare and mostly related to exceptional conditions in the mountains. Therefore some compensation may be requested from your side due to less participants per guide.

How technical does it get ? How fit should I be ?

  • Skill level ***

You should be at ease with long and demanding descents. You're able to deal with hairpin bends and tackle back-breaking inclines, master your brakes, hop over small tricky sections (tree roots, rocks, steps). Descents are often long and sustained (but progressive as the week goes on), sometimes steep, often technically demanding, sometimes exposed sections but rarely dangerous. You'll end being an expert rider or maybe even an ace in mountain biking skills !

  • Stamina level ***

For keen and passionate mountain bikers or sporty people, who enjoy making efforts and regularly do an outdoor activity. You are sporty, are used to go out riding for a full day at least once a week and a maybe a few shorter outings in a week, at least a few weeks before you head off for a trip with us. Our rides will take you on quite long climbs where you may sometimes even have to push or carry your bike. Expect ascents between + 800 m & + 1400 m approx per day.

Good to know: if you don't have the skills and stamina required, the guide may ask you to leave the group for the well-being of the rest of the group. If any doubt, please do not hesitate to ask us !

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes that it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start. Prefer lightweight warm and comfortable clothing. This is not just a detail, it makes a hell of a difference !

Headwear

  • Sunglasses and glasses with clear lenses for forest sections and cloudy days (it's important to protect your eyes). Photochromic lenses adapt to light intensity and protection categories range from 1 to 3 or 2 to 4 to optimize visibility from shade to brightness. Very useful.
  • A buff and/or thin beanie that you can put under your helmet if it's cold.

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved top as well as leggings to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Have this in mind if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Outer layer: a light fleece jacket and/or a light hooded down jacket that you can put under a jacket that has a breathable waterproof membrane (soft shell type or Goretex), easy to slip on during a break. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: mountain biking shorts and leggings in case it gets cold
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane.
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed in pools or hot water springs baths.
  • Good to have: an extra t-shirt in your bike backpack, appreciated after a big sweat on an uphill ride).

Footwear

  • Bike socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Remember this if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers or crocs are recommended for evening wear.

Odds & ends

  • a 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • a pocket knife
  • duck tape
  • factor 50 suncream
  • a duffle bag holding up to 90 litres to leave at the gîte, avoid suitcases.

Toiletries and first aid kit

  • Personal toilet bag
  • To make up your a first aid kit, check out the Ifremmont website.

In partnership with

And last but not least...

Don't forget to

  • Leave our contact details with your friends and family
  • Bring your papers and I.D. (passport and visa if necessary)
  • Bring your insurance contract number and documents (if you've chosen not to have insure coverage with us)
  • Bring your “carte vitale” or your European health card (for EU citizens) - if you don't have one you can order one for free online  www.ameli.fr
  • Check that you have the right equipment
  • Take spare batteries and a charger for your electronic devices such as camera, video recorder
  • Bring some cash and your credit card
  • Leave in a good frame of mind: we're going to have a great time even if we may not happen to not make it to the summit !
  • Before leaving: water the plants, empty the rubbish bin, turn off water and gas, and tell your partner that you're going to have a good time (please not by text message), that you've well deserved... If you don't follow the latter recommendation, you'll most probably kick yourself when you get back!
