Day to day

Day 1 - Plateau d'Emparis

The guide will meet you either at Briançon train station at 9am or directly at La Grave, in front of the gîte. You'll be wearing your best mountain bike gear for the meeting! We'll be off riding just afterwards... in the direction of the Plateau d'Emparis. As you head up the track beyond the hamlet of Le Chazelet, you soon get the impression that you're at the end of the world. Magnificent scenery all along the way, with breathtaking views of the Meije! We'll reach an altitude of about 2,400m on this route but, don't worry, apart from a few short steep sections, the ascent is gradual until we reach the lakes high up on the plateau. The ride ends with a long descent of around ten kilometres all the way back to our gîte. A great warm-up for this first day. Aperitif on the terrace. Dinner at the gîte.

Elevation gain: +1100m/ -1100m

Distance: +/- 30 km

Meals included this day : dinner

Accommodation included this day : gîte

Day 2 - Chemin du Roy

Today's programme includes the Chemin du Roy, one of the nuggets of the Briançonnais! This famous balcony path offers incredible views of the glaciers and the highest peaks in the Ecrins National Park. A beautiful single then awaits us as we descend into the valley, where we'll take a short break for a bite to eat. Return along a bucolic path towards the Col du Lautaret, skirting the Guisane. If you're still not satisfied, you can extend your walk a little further. Otherwise, it's back to the gîte... where a nice hot meal awaits!

Elevation gain: +1200m/-1200m, possibility of more according to the group's wishes

Distance: 30km

Meals included this day: breakfast - dinner

Accommodation included this day : gîte

Day 3 - Vallon d'Arsine

Last day on the bike: we're going to get some great views! To warm up, we start by climbing the Col du Lautaret! We then set off on a beautiful path along the edge of the park. At times, the path is a little exposed, but the scenery of the Vallon d'Arsine is well worth the effort! A real high-mountain experience. A long, slightly technical descent along the Romanche brings us to the village of La Grave. We'll stop for lunch here, facing the Meije! Back to the gîte in the afternoon, then transfer back to Briançon station and the end of your stay.

Elevation gain: +900m / - 900m

Distance: 30km

Meals included this day: breakfast

The program of this MTB/E-bike course around La Meije is indicative. The weather conditions, the mountain and the participants may lead the guide to modify it. We ask you to respect his choices.

In case of change of the 'Uses and Customs' defined by the local mountain bike companies, who estimate the reasonable number of clients per instructor, so that the latter can supervise you safely, Azimut respects these changes even if it happens after the sale of the trips. These cases are rare and often linked to exceptional mountain conditions, and compensation may be requested in case of a decrease in the number of participants per instructor.

How technical does it get ? How fit should I be ?

  • Skill level ***

For mountain bikers who are already good downhillers and confident in their technique. You'll be able to take hairpin bends, ride a sloping path without fear, control your braking, pass over small obstacles (such as roots, rocks, steps). The descents are long and sustained (but progressive over the week), sometimes steep, often technical, sometimes exposed but rarely dangerous. You'll emerge as an experienced rider, or even a crack rider!

  • Stamina level **

For mountain bikers who already ride regularly, or who are regular sportsmen and women. We'll be riding on progressive 4x4 trails, with occasional steep sections. Expect to climb between 600m and 1400m per day, which is very affordable on an electric mountain bike.

Good to know: If you don't have the required level, the guide might ask you to leave the group for your own safety, that of the group or the well-being of the group as a whole. Don't hesitate to ask us if you have any doubts!

Clothes

This list of clothes is designed to give you an idea of clothes that it may be a good to have with you. By no means do you need to have the latest brands or the latest gear, but if you need to renew your wardrobe, this guide would be a good start. Prefer lightweight warm and comfortable clothing. This is not just a detail, it makes a hell of a difference !

Headwear

  • Sunglasses and glasses with clear lenses for forest sections and cloudy days (it's important to protect your eyes). Photochromic lenses adapt to light intensity and protection categories range from 1 to 3 or 2 to 4 to optimize visibility from shade to brightness. Very useful.
  • A buff and/or thin beanie that you can put under your helmet if it's cold.

Bodywear

  • Under layer: breathable long sleeved top as well as leggings to maintain heat. A tip: merino wool is breathable and has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore less likely to smell as opposed to synthetic fabrics. Have this in mind if you need to update your wardrobe.
  • Outer layer: a light fleece jacket and/or a light hooded down jacket that you can put under a jacket that has a breathable waterproof membrane (soft shell type or Goretex), easy to slip on during a break. Make sure it's lightweight and compact so it doesn't take up too much space in your backpack
  • Bottom layer: mountain biking shorts and leggings in case it gets cold
  • Hands: light fleece or soft shell gloves, a pair of silk glove liners to go underneath, warm gloves with a breathable and waterproof membrane.
  • Swimming gear: it takes up such little space, it would be a shame not to bring it just in case. Avoid swimming shorts or bermudas, they are not usually allowed in pools or hot water springs baths.
  • Good to have: an extra t-shirt in your bike backpack, appreciated after a big sweat on an uphill ride).

Footwear

  • Bike socks: merino wool socks are breathable and have anti-bacterial properties and are less likely to smell as opposed to those made of synthetic fabrics. Remember this if you need to stock up.
  • Slippers or crocs are recommended for evening wear.

Odds & ends

  • a 1 litre flask (Thermos or Camelback)
  • a pocket knife
  • duck tape
  • factor 50 suncream
  • a duffle bag holding up to 90 litres to leave at the gîte, avoid suitcases.

Toiletries and first aid kit

  • Personal toilet bag
  • To make up your a first aid kit, check out the Ifremmont website.

  • Bring your “carte vitale” or your European health card (for EU citizens) - if you don't have one you can order one for free online  www.ameli.fr
  • Check that you have the right equipment
  • Take spare batteries and a charger for your electronic devices such as camera, video recorder
  • Bring some cash and your credit card
  • Leave in a good frame of mind: we're going to have a great time even if we may not happen to not make it to the summit !
  • Before leaving: water the plants, empty the rubbish bin, turn off water and gas, and tell your partner that you're going to have a good time (please not by text message), that you've well deserved... If you don't follow the latter recommendation, you'll most probably kick yourself when you get back!
